Certification Examination Process (For Non-Medicos in Aesthetic Sciences)

The SIB Certification Process is designed to ensure that non-medical professionals possess the knowledge, practical skills, and ethical understanding required to safely and effectively practice within the scope of aesthetic cosmetology and non-invasive procedures.
 

1. EXAMINATION OBJECTIVES

The certification examinations aim to:

  • Assess theoretical knowledge and practical proficiency in aesthetic cosmetology.

  • Ensure understanding of skin science, treatment protocols, and safety standards.

  • Promote ethical, client-centered practice within the non-medical scope.

  • Align candidates with international standards in aesthetic and cosmetic practice.
     

2. EXAMINATION STRUCTURE

The SIB certification process consists of three key components:

A. Written Examination

  • Evaluates foundational and advanced theoretical knowledge.

  • Includes multiple-choice questions (MCQs), case-based scenarios, and short-answer questions.

  • Covers topics such as skin anatomy and physiology, basic dermatology for cosmetologists, product knowledge and ingredients, non-invasive aesthetic procedures, hygiene and sterilization, safety, and professional ethics.

  • Examination papers are set and moderated by SIB Academic and Continental Presidents.

B. Practical Examination

  • Assesses hands-on skills and treatment execution in a controlled environment.

  • Candidates may be evaluated on facials and advanced skin treatments, superficial chemical peels, basic device handling (where permitted), and skin analysis and consultation techniques.

  • Focus areas include technique, hygiene, safety protocols, client handling, communication, and professional workflow.

C. Oral (VIVA) Examination

  • Evaluates clinical reasoning within cosmetology scope, problem-solving abilities, and ethical decision-making.

  • Includes case discussions, treatment planning, understanding of contraindications, and client management.

 

3. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

To appear for SIB certification, candidates must:

  • Complete a recognized cosmetology or aesthetic training program from SIB Recognised, Accredited, or Affiliated institutes.

  • Meet basic educational qualifications as per program level.

  • Submit proof of course completion and practical training where applicable.

  • Provide institute recommendation or trainer endorsement if required.


4. EXAMINATION ADMINISTRATION

A. Examination Committee

  • Comprises certified trainers, senior cosmetologists, educators, and industry experts.

  • Ensures fair evaluation, standardization, and ethical conduct.

B. Examination Venues

  • Conducted at SIB-approved training centers, partner institutes, or designated assessment hubs.

  • Written exams may be conducted online or offline.

  • Practical exams are conducted in fully equipped professional environments.

C. Standardization and Security

  • Uniform evaluation criteria across all centers.

  • Standardized tools, products, and procedures.

  • Strict identity verification and anti-malpractice protocols.

  • Secure handling of examination materials.

 

5. GRADING AND RESULTS

  • Candidates must pass all components: written, practical, and viva.

  • Evaluation is based on structured marking schemes and standardized rubrics.

  • Results are reviewed by the SIB Examination Committee and declared within a defined timeline.


6. RE-EXAMINATION POLICY

  • Candidates who do not meet passing criteria may reappear after additional training or practice.

  • Guidelines include a defined number of attempts and mandatory skill improvement if required.


7. CERTIFICATION AND PROGRESSION

  • Successful candidates receive the title : SIGMA International Board Certified

  • Designation may vary as SIGMA Professional or SIGMA Cosmetologist depending on institute category.

  • Certification validates competence in non-medical aesthetic procedures and adherence to professional standards.

  • Periodic upskilling or continuing education may be required to maintain certification validity.


8. ETHICAL PRACTICE AND SCOPE

  • Certified professionals must work strictly within non-medical scope of practice.

  • Medical or invasive procedures are not permitted.

  • Client safety, hygiene, and transparency must be maintained at all times.


9. APPEALS AND GRIEVANCES

  • Candidates may appeal results or report concerns regarding examination conduct.

  • All cases are reviewed by an independent SIB panel to ensure fairness and transparency.

SIB certifications are awarded based on compliance with SIGMA International Professional Standards (SIPS), a structured framework covering safety, ethics, infection control, and professional practice in cosmetology and aesthetic sciences.
